In the history competition of the Federal President 2020/21 »Moving times. Sport Makes Society«, 1,349 entries from around 3,400 participants were submitted nationwide.
The Geschichtswettbewerb des Bundespräsidenten (Körber-Stiftung) is the largest historical research competition for young people in Germany. It aims to awaken interest in children and young people for their own history, promote independence and strengthen a sense of responsibility. “Moving Times. Sport makes society” was the theme of the 27th call for entries.
Despite the effects of the corona pandemic and the associated restrictions on research and fieldwork, the children and young people have researched an impressive variety of sports topics in connection with their region or their family history over the past six months.
Students of LIS entered the competition with the topic: “Sport at Dhfk Leipzig in GDR times and Udo Quellmalz”. Mr Quellmalz used to be one of our PE teachers, and has a very eventful sporting past. He is a successful German judoka and was European champion in the U21 age group. At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, he won the gold medal in the semi-lightweight category up to 65 kg. Udo Quellmalz was also world champion twice (1991 in Barcelona and 1995 in Japan).
In mid-2021, the state juries intensively evaluated all the work and compared it with the other entries in the respective state. LIS grade 4 students Albert, Jona and Reuben worked together with our grade 12 student Tom, who assisted as part of his CAS time, and they together worked on an entry for the History Competition of the Körber Stiftung. This LIS contribution was honoured with an award, and the students won a “Föderpreis” of 200 Euros.
