Boarding at LIS
Our historic boarding house is being renovated in the neighbourhood of Plagwitz, just a short walk from school. Learners will live in single or double rooms, share generous common spaces and have their own private outdoor courtyard.
Our historic boarding house sits in Plagwitz, one of Leipzig’s most creative neighbourhoods, a short walk from school. It will be home to just 36 learners — large enough to build real independence, small enough that everyone is known.
Right now, it is a building site. We are renovating the house from the ground up and every decision is being made with 16 to 18-year-olds in mind: where the kitchens go, how the common rooms open onto each floor, how much light reaches the Hof. We will be sharing the transformation as it happens. This picture is a mock up of one of the rooms.
Boarding at Leipzig International School is for learners aged 16 and above who are ready for more independence while remaining part of a caring and supportive international learning community.
Boarding at LIS will be about much more than where learners live. Boarders will become part of our international school community, complete the IB Diploma Programme and take part in the music, sport, art, theatre, leadership, service and other experiences that make up life at LIS.
At home, they will begin to manage more of their own lives and take responsibility for the community they share. And they will have Leipzig around them — a great city in which to begin finding their own way.
Learning to be a Citizen of the World.
What we mean by independent Boarding
Independent boarding at LIS doesn’t mean being left to manage everything alone. It means taking on more of everyday life with the right people still around you.
Our boarders will learn to manage their time and money, look after their rooms, do their laundry and contribute to the spaces they share. They’ll balance school and free time, find their way around Leipzig and live alongside people from different cultures.
Some of this will come easily. Some of it won’t.
Our role is to set clear expectations, offer guidance when it’s needed, and know when to let learners work something out for themselves.
By the time they leave LIS, we want them ready for life after school in more ways than one.
Daily School Life
Boarders are first and foremost LIS learners. They will join an international learning community, complete the IB Diploma Programme and prepare for universities in Germany and around the world. Life at LIS is about more than academics: music, sport, art, theatre, leadership, service, clubs and activities give learners opportunities to explore their interests, build friendships and discover what they are capable of.
Leipzig is part of that experience too. Our learners won’t live on an isolated boarding campus. They will live in a real neighbourhood, walk to school and gradually get to know the city for themselves, with music, art, sport, cafés, parks, canals and lakes all part of life here.
Home
Our boarding house in Plagwitz is being built as a place learners can make their own. They will have their own space, share everyday life with a small community of other young people and will have familiar adults around them who get to know them well.
Our Head of Boarding is setting up a team that includes social workers. A member of the boarding team will always be present in the house, providing guidance and support while giving learners the space to become more independent. Because boarding is part of LIS, that circle extends beyond the house, including our counseling team.
The House
12 single rooms and 12 double rooms Every learner has a room of their own or shares with one other person. No dormitories.
Common rooms on every floor Each floor has its own shared space, creating smaller communities inside the wider house. Somewhere to study together, spend time with friends or do nothing much at the end of the day.
A private Hof Our own outdoor courtyard in the middle of the city. Somewhere to eat outside, study, meet friends or sit in the sun.
Shared bathrooms Bathrooms are shared between approximately three learners.
On-site laundry Learners do their own laundry. It is one of the small responsibilities that adds up.
Boarding opens in August 2027.
