    Richard was born and raised in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. His degree is from Bristol University in Theology. He was a specialist social worker for a number of years before changing to teaching in 2002. He did his teacher training in Birmingham UK and worked at the same school for six years before venturing off to see a bit of the world. After 8 years in Thailand (four in Bangkok and four in Phuket) and a short stint in Egypt Richard is very happy to be in Leipzig Germany.

    Lana grew up in Würzburg, Germany and moved to Jordan in her teen years where she attended the International Community School Amman and finished off her A-levels. Afterwards, Lana moved to Berlin to do a voluntary social year in a nursery. She then decided to study social work in the picturesque town of Leeuwarden (Netherlands). For her probationary year, she came to the sociocultural center Haus Steinstraße e.V. in Leipzig. She fell in love with the city and decided to stay here. Lana assisted DaZ (German as a Second Language) classes at the Helmholtzschule in Leipzig and holds a Bachelor of Social Work.

    Angel Antoranz grew up in Marbella in Southern Spain. However he spent most of his adult life in Newcastle-upon-Tyne where he qualified as a teacher. LIS is Angel’s first international school: before coming here in 2012 he worked in the state sector back in England. He currently teaches Spanish from Grades 6 to 12 and he is a member of the school’s works council.

    Katrin grew up in Thuringia and started her career as a mechanical engineer in Leipzig.  She then worked in commercial, technical and sales departments in various companies in Germany for several years. Before joining LIS Katrin spent some years in the UK where she obtained a Master’s degree in Environmental Science from Reading University. She joined LIS in 2015 and since then has been working in the school’s secondary office.

    Steffi Arnas grew up in the Erzgebirge region in Saxony and has professional and educational training in the hospitality industry. After thirteen years of working in various customer service organisations she joined LIS in August 2009 and since then can be found at the school’s reception desk.

    Tony grew up in the North West of England. After studying Social Sciences at Leeds and Applied Statistics at Oxford, he pursued his first career in the investment banking and fund management industries. In 2003, driven by a desire to do something that really made a difference, he changed career and re-trained as a teacher of Maths. Since then, he has never looked back, enjoying every moment working with students and fellow teachers. After a number of years as a Head of Maths in two UK state schools, Tony moved to Germany to become Middle and Upper School Principal at the International School of Ulm/Neu-Ulm. After 6 happy years in Ulm, he was delighted to be offered the opportunity to join the wonderful team at Leipzig International School.

    Gary Bell is a Theology graduate of the Queen's University in Belfast. He also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from the University of Liverpool  and a Master's degree in International History from Staffordshire University. He worked in schools in England before joining the staff of Leipzig International School in 2008. He teaches Global Perspectives and History and is also an examiner in History for Cambridge International Examinations.

    Sabrina Bennett comes from a small town in Wales called Penarth. She holds a Sports Science degree and a Master's degree in Health and Exercise Science from The University of Glamorgan. Sabrina trained to be a teacher in Bangor University and taught in Wales, England, Germany and Switzerland, before coming to Leipzig in 2008. She currently teaches Physical Education in the Primary and Secondary school, is a form tutor and is the Head of Department for Physical Education.

    Nancy grew up in Leipzig and joined LIS in 2006. She graduated as 'Wirtschaftskauffrau', studied Economics and holds diplomas as Management Assistant and in Foreign Language Communications. Before taking over the position as Headmaster's Secretary with LIS, where she actively assists the Head of School and the LIS Management, she worked as PA and Office Manager in various fields.

    Géraldine Bludau hails from Paris, and is an Economic and Social Science graduate of the University of Paris. She also holds a Master's degree in Science of Education from the University of Grenoble. Géraldine joined LIS in 2006, having previously taught in Morocco. She currently teaches French to Grades 6 to 12.

    Reingart Böhmer was born and grew up in Swakopmund, Namibia, and studied for a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, IT, Statistics, Applied Mathematics and, as additional subject, Music, at the University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa, where she also did her Honours in Statistics while teaching as assistant Junior Lecturer in Statistics. After successfully completing her university career (1979) she became Junior Lecturer in Statistics at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in Pretoria, followed by a position as mathematics teacher at St. Mary's Diocesan School in Durban, teaching Grades 8 - 12, as music teacher at the German School Durban, and again as mathematics teacher for Grades 6 - 12 at LIS since 2001. Coaching volleyball for club and provincial teams in South Africa as well as in Germany for many years and teaching music - flute, conducting various youth, children's and adult choirs, are two other aspects of her professional teaching career.

    Nadine was born in Meiningen, South Thuringia and studied Politics and History (Lehramt) at Leipzig University, before gaining a Master in German as a Foreign Language, English Studies and French Studies. In 2010 she published a book for bilingual children. Before she joined LIS in 2011 she taught GSL to refugees and immigrants and Business German to individual clients. At the beginning Nadine helped out in the Primary school, before joining the secondary German department. She currently teaches German at IGCSE and IB level, is a Grade 10 Form Tutor and holds the position of Student Council Advisor.

    Juliane was born in Lusatia and went to school in Dresden. She then lived in London for one year working as an au pair. Upon coming back to Germany Juliane moved to Magdeburg to attend the Otto-von-Guerricke University where she completed her master's degree in educational science and Anglistics in 2010. For the past five years she worked in a private daycare facility for children in Leipzig during which she also received her degree in state-approved early childhood education. Since October 2016 Juliane has been part of the Leipzig International Kindergarten nursery team.

    Sarah grew up in the east of England and then after receiving her Bachelor of Education she started her career in international education. Over the course of 25 years Sarah has taught and been a leader in Primary Schools in the United Arab Emirates, Thailand and now Germany. With a commitment to the belief that we are all life-long learners she has continued to study herself and received the National Professional Qualification for Headteachers from the UK and a Masters in Educational Leadership and Management. Sarah came to LIS in 2012 and thoroughly enjoys being in Leipzig.

    Gwen grew up in various U.S. cities before her family finally settled in Austin, Texas. After living in West Berlin for several years following graduation from high school, she returned to Texas and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Geography: Resource and Environmental Studies, at Texas State University. In between teaching Geography in Texas for seven years, she continued her education and earned her Master's in Applied Geography. Gwen and her family moved to Berlin in 2010 where she taught MYP and IB Geography. After a short teaching hiatus in Budapest, she arrived at LIS in 2014 and currently teaches middle school, IGCSE, and DP Geography.

    Peter was born in New Orleans Louisiana and has spent much of his life in various parts of the United States. He holds a Bachelor Degree in Aquatic Biology from the University of Texas in Austin.  Peter has nineteen years of teaching experience in secondary science, five of which have been in Europe (Berlin, Budapest, and Leipzig).  He is currently Head of the Science Department in the Secondary School and teaches IGCSE and IB Biology.

    Myles was born in Kent, England but grew up in Durban, South Africa. He studied at Edgewood College of Education where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Primary Education. Myles has taught previously in South Africa, England and Thailand. He moved with his family to Leipzig in August 2014 and is currently working at both of the school's sites as a full-time substitute teacher.

    Rebecca grew up in Sheffield, England where her family are originally from. In her early twenties she moved to London after qualifying as a Primary School teacher and taught in Barking & Dagenham for 4 years. She then moved to Bangkok Thailand and taught in 2 International Schools there. After 10 years teaching in Thailand, Rebecca wanted to move closer to the UK but wanted to remain as an International School teacher as she loves the diversity it brings. She moved to Leipzig with her family in 2014 and following maternity leave re-joined the LIS staff in February 2016 as a Grade 5 teacher.

    Romnick Mariano Cajigal comes from the beautiful tropical country of the Philippines, with a degree in Biology from the University of the Philippines, Manila. He joined LIS in August 2011. Prior to working at LIS, Mr. C taught Physics and Biology in the Philippines, Physical Science and Biology in the United States of America, and IGCSE Biology and A/AS Level Biology in Indonesia.  The famous Mr. C has been a form teacher since he moved in to LIS as well as being a Biology teacher at IGCSE and IB levels.

    Born and raised in Leipzig, Robert is one of the few natives on the LIS staff. He joined the school in 2013 as Parent Community Coordinator and is now holding the position of Management Assistant. Robert is responsible for external communication, the school’s social media channels and website administration, physical document archiving, and functions as the editorial head for the school magazine LIS Observer. Before joining LIS, Robert worked in the field of copy-editing and then as Project Coordinator at an independent community radio station in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt. Robert holds a Master's Degree in German as a Foreign Language and Italian Studies. In 2017, he joined the German Department in Secondary School.

Gaynor began her teaching career in the UK but has also taught in international schools the USA, the Sudan, Austria, and now Germany. Gaynor, and her husband, began teaching at LIS in August 2012 and they both very much enjoy the school and life in the city of Leipzig.

He was brought up in Poland and the USA, completed his high-school in Austria, then college and university the USA, after which he taught Physics in Austria, England, the USA, and the Sudan, before coming to Leipzig in 2012. He is a product of the IB system, with degrees in Physics (B.A., Harvard) and Special Education/Visual Impairment (M.A., Columbia). Romy joined LIS in 2010 with a wide range of experience in working with children aged 3 - 12 both in the USA and Germany. Romy is the LIS Primary School Counsellor and Peer Mediation Coordinator. Before this she worked as Hort Educator and Learning Support Assistant. Romy believes in the solution-focused approach to help support individuals and groups.

Kylie joined LIS as a Visual Art teacher in January 2015, having previously taught in New Zealand, the UK and in international schools in Berlin.

    Having attained a BA (Hons) degree in German and English, from the University of London, and a post-graduate teaching qualification (PGCE), from the University of Wales, Fiona taught for 11 years in England, before joining LIS in 1999. Her particular interest has always been in the realm of student support/pastoral care. Years of experience, in a variety of contexts and in various roles of responsibility both in the UK and at LIS, led to her current position as Head of Student Support Services. Having previously taught English, Fiona now teaches PSHE and also serves as the school's Child/Youth Welfare and Protection Consultant and Coordinator.

    Jennifer came from Berlin to do her apprenticeship in Leipzig, has been here since 2006, and still loves it. During her educational training Jennifer also did many internships and small jobs working with children. In 2012 she began working at LIS, as an intern among the Early Years groups at the Leipzig International Kindergarten. Currently, Jennifer is working with the Hort team at campus Könnitzstraße.

She graduated from Liverpool University with a degree in English and German and subsequently worked in the fields of publishing and international development. She later re-trained to become a primary school teacher and spent her first few years as a teacher in the state system in England, before starting at LIS.

    Thomas Elms is from London, England. He has an honours degree in English Literature, and a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) in Primary Education with a Modern Foreign Languages (German) specialism. He taught in various schools in and around Manchester, north-west England, before making the move to Leipzig in 2009 with his wife Bryony Galligan, also a primary teacher at LIS. He is a keen cyclist, runner and tennis player, and is the coach of Varsity Badminton and Tennis.

Deborah holds a T.E.S.O.L. certification from Barcelona Spain's Oxford House College. Deborah also completed her Master of Education with honours from Arizona's Grand Canyon University. She has been with LIS since 2003 and has taught within the Early Years and Primary Departments.

    Lito Vera Fouki was born in Lemgo, Germany, but grew up in Greece, Thessaloniki. She studied Educational/Pedagogical Sciences at University of Ioannina, where she obtained a Bachelor degree. In 2013, she moved to Manchester UK where she finished her Master's Degree on Inclusive Education and Special Educational Needs. After the completion of the MA, she started working in different schools in the greater area of Manchester, resulting in her current position in LIS as Learning Support Teacher.

    Paul grew up in the Midlands of England, and is a graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. After training as a teacher and gaining experience in education, he took up the position of Director of Music at Aiglon College, Switzerland. After five years in the Swiss mountains, he moved back to England to lead the music faculty in a specialist music college. He has been enjoying working at LIS since 2011, both inside the classroom teaching music at IGCSE and IB level, and outside lesson time directing ensembles.

    Simone Fritz is a qualified educator recognized by the state. She is part of the LIS Hort educator team and Assistant Hort Leader. Simone came to LIS in 2009 and started her work with the "Non-sleepers" in Early Years 2. After two years of  teaching German in Early Years 3 classes, she became an Educator-In-Class in the Primary section. Simone's main area of work remains the LIS Hort, where she works with an open educational programme every morning and afternoon on school days, and when Hort offers a Holiday programme during school holidays.

    Jemima Gardner grew up in Australia and has a Primary Education degree from the University of Technology, Sydney. After four years teaching in Sydney and a stint travelling overseas, she moved to Leipzig. Since starting at Leipzig International School 10 years ago, she has taught every class from Grade 1-4 and has held a number of leadership roles. This year she will focus on teaching a Grade 2 class.

    Maggie Giles, originally from the UK where she had considerable experience leading music departments in comprehensive schools, joined the staff of Leipzig International School in 2013. Her role is Coordinator of the IB Career-related Certificate (IBCP) and also joint Head of Department for Theory of Knowledge. Previously she has taught in international schools in Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Thailand and Angola, and her responsibilities have included Director of Music, Head of Arts and Theory of Knowledge Coordinator.

    Daniela grew up in Bologna, Italy. She lived in Italy, Canada, France and, in 2015, she moved to Leipzig. She holds a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology and worked several years as researcher on human rights, migration and intercultural relations. She also enjoys working with children and young people and has experience in child care and after-school settings in Italy. At LIS she is Educator Assistant in the Hort Team.

    Anke is a native Leipziger who just recently returned to her beloved home town. After completing her master's degree in physics at the University of Leipzig, she went on to receive her teaching degree in mathematics and physics. Anke worked at schools in the Frankfurt area but then moved to California to teach IB MYP mathematics at an international school in Silicon Valley for the past three years. At LIS she teaches mathematics to Grades 6-11.

  • Habicht-Geels, Valerie

    Valerie Habicht-Geels was born in Eindhoven in The Netherlands. She studied at The Pedagogic Academy in Maastricht (The Netherlands) from 1988-1992 where she got her first Bachelor's degree as a primary school teacher. Valerie earned her second Bachelor's degree from The Theater Academy Eindhoven (The Netherlands) where she became an actress and a theater teacher. She was nominated for 4 prizes with her plays and won the first prize for Germany, Austria and Switzerland at the “Heidelberg Theatre-Festival” in 2013. Valerie started working at LIS in 2012 as a substitute teacher. Since 2015 she teaches German as an Additional Language (GAL) in Primary School.

    Liz grew up in the South West of England and after finishing her Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1979, has lived and taught in the West Midlands of England, in Zambia, The Ivory Coast and Japan. As an LIS parent she produced and directed the school’s first High School Drama Production, ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, in 2008, putting Drama firmly on the secondary curriculum for the first time. She finally joined the English Department in 2009 when the children began to fly the nest.

    Annie grew up in Australia and taught in primary schools across Melbourne before moving to Europe to teach at the International School of Florence in 2005. She graduated with a Bachelor of Musical Theatre from the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music and a Bachelor of Teaching in music and drama from the University of Melbourne. As well as being the Primary School music teacher, she has also taught in the classroom, PSHE and drama. She has loved directing five of the LIS Staff musicals with all our talented staff. She is excited about another year of music-making and performances in LIS Primary.

    Christiane Heinold grew up in the south of Leipzig. She studied at the University of Leipzig and has passed the Second State Examination in Law (Saxony) which qualifies her to be a lawyer in Germany. She has always worked in the field of Human Resources. After her studies, she moved to Papenburg and worked at a world famous shipyard which built cruise vessels. She returned to Leipzig in 2009 and worked as Human Resources Manager for a Danish Energy Company. Christiane joined us in December 2013 and is responsible for Human Resources at LIS.

    Melanie Heinrich grew up in the town of Olpe near Cologne, Germany. After receiving her state-recognised Educator, she worked more than 15 years in different positions in the field of Early Childhood. During a 3 years stay in Melbourne, Australia, she worked as a kindergarten teacher and received her Diploma of Early Childhood. Before moving to Leipzig she worked in Munich as the director of a bilingual kindergarten. Since March 2015 she is the working at the Leipzig International Kindergarten. In January 2016, Melanie took over the position as Kindergarten Director at LIS.

  • Hilbich, Rita

    Rita Hilbich is an original Leipzig native. She was born and raised here. Rita has a degree in Economics from the University of Leipzig and has received training and further education in tax law. Rita joined LIS way back in 2005 when LIS had 373 students and 60 staff members. She has been witness to the steady growth of LIS with rising students and staff numbers in recent years and has also seen the restoration of the LIS Campus.
    Rita is the Senior Accountant at LIS and is responsible for payroll and financial accounting, various reports and financial statements.

  • Hillyer, Rebecca

    Becky Hillyer comes from Chester in the UK and is a graduate of International Relations and History from the University of Essex, with a PGCE from the University of Leicester. Becky joined LIS in 1998 having previously worked in International and Bilingual Schools in Switzerland, Turkey and Colombia. She has been the IB Diploma Coordinator at LIS since 2009 and is also joint head of department for Theory of Knowledge. She teaches History and the Theory of Knowledge on the Diploma Programme.  Becky is also a member of the board of the educational organisation Make Change Possible E.V.

  • Hochschild, Claire

    Early Years Music Specialist

    Claire was born and brought up in Wales. Her early musical education (recorder, piano, flute and bassoon) led her to studying music at the Royal Academy in London where she gained her teaching diploma and GRSM certificate. As a post-graduate she moved to Leipzig to study the bassoon. Since graduating from the "Hochschule für Musik und Theater" she has worked in the Athens State Orchestra and freelance in and around Leipzig. She spent a number of years teaching English in a German Kindergarten and, as of recent, giving piano lessons. Claire is teaching music to all the nursery and pre-school children at the Leipzig International Kindergarten.

    Marie-Luise Hoffmann grew up in Leipzig and after a couple of years travelling and living in Australia, Canada and the UK, she returned to her hometown to work as a Hort Educator and teaching assistant in Grade 1, since January 2015. Marie-Luise holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work.

    Christian Horn grew up in Plauen, Germany and has a degree in Primary Education from the University of Greenwich. After teaching in England and international schools in Germany he joined LIS in 2010 and taught Grade 3 and then Reception. Christian currently teaches Grade 1 and is the Arts co-ordinator for Primary School.

    Kathryn Horn grew up in Manitoba, Canada and has a Bachelor of Arts degree as well as a degree in Education from the University of Winnipeg. After graduation, Kathryn taught in Canada before teaching at international schools in Germany. She joined the LIS team in 2009 as a Grade 1 teacher. Kathryn currently teaches Grade 3 and she is the IPC co-ordinator for the Primary School.

    Jordan comes from Manchester in the north of Britain. An avid art enthusiast, she completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in the History of Art at Liverpool John Moores University. During this time she specialised in education and the arts which led her to begin volunteering at local schools in her home town. She completed her Postgraduate Certificate in Education at Edge Hill University. After teaching in a central school in Manchester for the last few years she is happy to be teaching in Early Years at Leipzig International School.

    Katja was born in Leipzig and grew up here. She holds a Master’s degree in German as a Foreign Language, English Studies and Educational Science. Katja has spent time in the USA and has worked as a freelancer in several institutions, having taught GSL to students of various language proficiency levels ranging in age from six to adults. She joined LIS in 2006 and has taught all grades from 1-12. She currently teaches German as a Foreign Language at IGCSE and IB level.

    Christiane Kaiser grew up in Germany, Torgau. She finished her degree with an international profile at the Sozial Pädagogisches Institut in Berlin. During her studies as “Staatlich anerkannte Erzieherin” she spent 3 months in Japan, where she did a practical training at the German School Tokyo-Yokohama. Christiane finished her degree as State-approved Early Childhood Educator in March 2012. Before joining the Leipzig International Kindergarten, Christiane worked at the “Fröbel Kindergarten” in Leipzig.

  • Käthner, Jayne

    Originally from Dundee, Scotland, Jayne Käthner has lived in Germany since 1997. After many years as a Personal Assistant in the National Health Service and in an international company in Bremen, Germany, Jayne followed her desire to work with children and worked for several years as a Helen Doron Early English Teacher. She moved to Leipzig in 2013 where she joined the Hort Team at LIS, initially as a substitute, continuing as an Educator Assistant and, since 2014, as an Educator. She currently supports Grade 5 and helps coordinate the Primary After School Activities.

  • Kaudelka, Stefan

    Stefan grew up in the Leipzig area. He decided to become an IT professional (Fachinformatiker) and has been working in the field of ICT for more than 15 years. He has been at LIS since 2011 where he started as ICT Assistant. From 2015 until April 2017 he worked as Database Administrator. As of May 2017 he holds the position of Head of ICT. Alongside this he likes programming and has both developed and enhanced several software platforms and software interfaces at LIS. He is also a passionate mountain biker and enjoys spending time with his family.

    Colin grew up in Derbyshire, England, and worked in sales, retail, HR and Recruitment before moving into international education in 2007. He is a graduate of Business Management and American Studies and holds a Certificate of Boarding Education, a Certificate of English Language Teaching, a Master of Business Administration and a PGCE. Colin has worked in international boarding schools in Spain, the Netherlands and Montenegro and teaches IB Business Management and IGCSE Global Perspectives.

    Kelly Kay grew up in the Burton-on-Trent, England, and is a Contemporary European Studies and English graduate of the University of Dundee. She holds a Postgraduate Certificate of Education from the University of Birmingham and a Master's degree in Education from the University of Oxford Brookes. Kelly joined LIS in 2014, having previously taught in England as well as at international boarding schools in Spain, the Netherlands and Montenegro. She currently teaches English and is phase level leader for Grades 9-12.

    Anett Keller-Scrutton was born in Germany and moved to England in 1990. She qualified as an early childhood educator in Germany and also holds a BSc in natural science from her studies in England. She has previously worked with children in London, and in management in Canterbury and Ashford. Anett joined the Leipzig International Kindergarten as a Nursery educator, and also looks after her team as their Phase Level Leader.

    Anna Kmiec was born in Poland, and spent part of her childhood in Germany, before moving to Mississauga, Canada. She graduated with a Master of Teaching degree from Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto (OISE/UT). Anna is the Primary EAL Coordinator at LIS, as well as the EAL co-teacher for Grades 2 and 3. She started her work at LIS as an EAL Teacher in August 2013. Previously, Anna worked as a primary classroom teacher in Ontario, Canada, Poland and England. She has taught students in Grades 1 through 5.

    Bethany grew up in Australia before moving to Dublin, Ireland where she lived for 6 years. There she began a Bachelor's Degree in Languages for Intercultural Communications (Spanish and German) at Dublin City University. However after an Erasmus exchange year in beautiful Leipzig, she decided to transfer her degree to the University of Leipzig, where she graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor in Romance Languages (Spanish and Italian). 3 years later she graduated from the Euro Akademie in Leipzig as a State Recognised Educator.
    She has been working at the LIS since 2015 and is currently working as a Nursery Educator.

    James grew up in Altenburg. He studied history at Leipzig University where he also worked as a tutor. A Fulbright Scholarship brought him to Washington, D.C. Back in Leipzig, he started working with children and young people and completed a Diploma in Social Pedagogy and Social Work (FH) at the University of Applied Sciences Mittweida. Before joining LIS in 2013, he worked in Uganda for many years where he helped set up developmental programmes for children and young people. At LIS he is currently working as an in-class educator in Grade 5 and is a member of the school’s works council.

    Carola grew up in Stendal (Saxony-Anhalt) and moved to Leipzig in 2006. She studied Japanese and German as a Foreign Language at the University of Leipzig and did her internship at LIS in 2010. After finishing her Bachelor's Degree she started working at LIS in 2011. Having taught German and GSL in the following years she decided to go back to university to gain her teacher qualification in German and English (Staatsexamen). Currently Carola teaches the IBDP German B programme in Grade 11 and 12.

    After growing up in the North of Germany Tanja studied and obtained a degree in Anglistik and Germanistik at the universities of Cologne and Osnabrück. She trained to become a teacher in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony. Her teaching experience before joining LIS in 2011 was in the German and British state school sectors. She worked in a Middle School in Germany and was Head of German in a specialist language college in England. She teaches Grades 6-10 and as Phase Level Leader she is responsible for the pastoral welfare of students in Grades 6-8.

    Matthew Lane is from Brisbane, Australia, where he completed bachelor’s degrees in arts and education at the University of Queensland. He also holds a Master of Education from the University of Southern Queensland, majoring in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). After working in the public education system in Queensland for several years he began his international teaching career at the International School of Stuttgart. He has worked as an EAL teacher at LIS since August 2012, supporting students in Grades 4 and 5. In 2016 Matthew joined the Secondary School Department working as EAL teacher and Form Tutor.

    Marianne was born in Leipzig and is a trained multilingual assistant. She lived in the UK for a time where she gathered experience as a commercial assistant and has also worked in several business functions in Germany. She joined LIS on 1 April 2011 and after two years as Whole School Secretary she is now working in the Secondary School Office.

    Danielle Lebel grew up in Quebec city, the capital of the French province of Canada. She holds a teaching degree and licence from Laval University in teaching French Mother Tongue and is also qualified to teach EAL. Danielle joined LIS in 2006, having previously taught English and French in Japan, Brunei and Switzerland. She currently teaches French to all levels and is the Head of Modern Languages. She is an IB examiner for French B.

    Stephen Lewis grew up in South Jersey USA, and studied and practised Fine Arts and painting at the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University,  the University of Reading in the UK and at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Steve has been working at LIS since 2002, presiding over the growth of Art at the school while also continuing to produce his own painting: his work can frequently be seen in local galleries.

    Sie Mei Li grew up in London (UK), and is a Biomedical Science Graduate with a PGCE from King's College London. Sie Mei joined LIS in 2009, having previously taught in a London state school, a bilingual school in Sichuan (China) and an international school in the Bahamas. She is a Biology specialist who has taught IGCSE/ IB Biology, PSHE and Maths at LIS, and is currently teaching General Science to Grades 6-8.

    Liane graduated as 'Diplomkauffrau' from studying Business Psychology, Business Administration, Marketing and Tourism Management. The central focus of her work has been in these areas since then. During and after her studies she lived and worked in the USA, in Australia and in New Zealand. Originally from Thuringia, she joined the school in 2010 as Parent Community Coordinator. In this position she supported LIS families (especially international families) both with school-related concerns and with any other needs around creating an interesting and satisfying life here in Leipzig. Liane now holds the position of Marketing Manager in which she continues to promote LIS as an outstanding school, both academically and in terms of all-round development.

    Dana returned to her childhood home City of Leipzig, having lived the last 15 years in the United States. While there, Dana earned Bachelor's degrees in Music and Arts Management as well as a Master's Degree in Music. Residing in Boston for eight years, Dana kept a busy schedule teaching voice, choir and recorder. In addition to many cities in the U.S., Dana's opera career has taken her to Italy, Austria and Germany. While in Boston, from 2010-12, she taught Music, Choirs and Hort in the German International School Boston (GISB). Dana joined LIS in 2013 and enjoys teaching Early Childhood Music at the Leipzig International Kindergarten.

    Becky Markovitz is from the United States and recently earned a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minnesota. While training to become an engineer, she realised her true passion – teaching. She began her teaching career as a private tutor in Maths, Science, and English and is excited to be a part of the LIS team. Becky is currently teaching Maths in Grades 6, 7, 8, and 11 and is a member of the LIS choir.

    Vita Martynyuk grew up in Kiev and started her career as Translator and Interpreter working for international companies in Ukraine. With a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service she left her home country in 2005, and two years later she obtained a double Master´s degree in Global Studies, from Leipzig University and from Vienna University. After four years working as a Technical Writer in Leipzig and gaining a further Master’s degree in General Management from Leipzig University of Applied Sciences 'HTWK', she joined LIS, and since 2014 she has been working as the school's Facility and Purchasing Coordinator.

    Deanne is a British teacher from the vibrant city of Birmingham. Deanne's interests are travelling, reading and being creative. Deanne graduated with honours from The University of Nottingham in 2010 and then went on to complete her PGCE in Secondary ICT at The University of Warwick. Deanne has spent her teaching career working in a Media Arts College in Birmingham and an international school in Bangkok, Thailand. In the latter part of her career Deanne has developed and refined the Primary ICT curriculum, giving students the opportunity to become more ICT-literate whilst simultaneously being challenged through innovative and immersive lessons.

    Ulrike grew up in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Saxony-Anhalt. She has a master's degree in chemistry and in business studies. Before joining LIS in 2012, Ulrike spent some years in Cracow, Poland, and since then has been working here in the science department.

    Suelyn Melo Range is from a Brazilian coastal city called Santos. After working in Guest Relations at five star hotels within Europe and Brazil, as well as one of the world’s largest cruising boats, she decided to make a cut and started dedicating her life to Education. After her graduation in Modern Languages and teaching Portuguese, undergoing through a specialization in Art and Education Studies and leading an art project for kids in the city of Leipzig, she is now part of the Hort Team as Educator Assistant.

    Ulrike is currently an English as an Additional Language teacher and joined LIS in 2010. Originally from Leipzig, she moved to Salem, Oregon to complete her teacher training and graduated from Western Oregon University with a degree in Primary School Teaching in 2009. She has also taught Early Years 3 and Grade 2 and 5 at LIS. She was responsible for the Primary School Yearbook 2014-2016.

    Originally from the south-west of England, Ian has lived in Leipzig since 2007 where he moved in order to complete his M.A. in Global Studies: A European Perspective at the Universität Leipzig. After two years working as the Practical Language Program Coordinator at the Technische Universität Chemnitz he pursued a career in secondary school teaching and has been at Leipzig International School since 2011. Ian teaches the IGCSE Global Perspectives, IB Business Management and IBCP Service Learning courses. He is an external examiner for the IGCSE Global Perspectives course and an avid member of the LIS coaching team. He is currently undertaking an MEd in (Secondary) Educational Leadership with the University of Buckingham.

    Amy graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a degree in Elementary Education. Shortly after graduating, she moved to Southeast Asia where she taught at an international school in Laos for over five years. She recently moved to Leipzig and worked as a substitute teacher at LIS at the end of the 2014-2015 school year. She is currently teaching Grade 4.

    Olga Murina has a degree in Linguistics, and German as a Second Language from Leipzig University. She has been working at LIS for two years: first in Primary, and then in Secondary School. She currently teaches GSL, is responsible for the Language Development Course of the IBCP programme, and supports Russian mother tongue speakers in the Self-Taught Language A programme.

    Helen grew up on the Orkney Islands, in the north of Scotland. She qualified with a BSc (Hons) in Nursing in 2003, and worked for more than 10 years in hospitals and in the community setting in Scotland, before joining LIS as the school nurse in June 2013.

    Josephine Ng comes all the way from San Francisco and holds a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of the Pacific. Before coming to Leipzig and LIS in 2013, she helped start up a bilingual German-English kindergarten in Halle and worked there for three years. At LIS, she worked with Grade One during her first year and has also worked with Early Years 3. She also serves as a member of the LIS Works Council.

  • Ní Leathlobhair, Roisin

    Róisín Ní Leathlóbhair is an experienced English teacher from Dublin, Ireland. She completed her Bachelor's Degree from University College Dublin in 2007. Her studies encompassed English, Irish and German language and literature. She first came to Leipzig in 2005 through the Erasmus student exchange programme. She graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. Róisín taught at two excellent schools in Dublin before returning to Leipzig to teach at the University. As well as being a Speaking Examiner for Cambridge English, Róisín is a published singer songwriter who sometimes performs in the city. Róisín joined the English Department at LIS in January 2016.

    Kjersti Nichols comes from New York and holds a Bachelor’s in German and a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Chicago. She has been living and working for over 10 years in Germany. She brings to LIS experience in working in child-care and after school settings in both the US and Germany. Prior to joining LIS in 2012, she was the director of a bi-lingual communal early childhood centre in Halle. At LIS she is responsible for leading the Hort team. She is also a member of the Primary Leadership Team.

  • Niven, Antje

    Antje, originally from Magdeburg/Germany, obtained her PhD in Psychology at the University of Auckland/New Zealand. In the last years, she has established and coordinated a PhD programme at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, which included the admission of national and international students. Antje joined LIS in June 2014 as Director of Admissions and is the first contact for new families.

    Maria was born in Thuringia and grew up in a small town near Erfurt. After school she went to the U.S. as an au pair. For her degree in state approved early childhood education she trained in a school near Bonn. After working there in a small kindergarten for 6 wonderful years, mainly in the nursery, she decided to move closer to her roots. In summer 2015 she came to Leipzig and started working in the Leipzig International Kindergarten.

  • Öktem, Serkan

    Serkan Öktem was born and raised in Izmir in Turkey. He moved to Istanbul for his university education in 1993 and graduated from Marmara University with a bachelor degree in electronics and computing education in 1998. He started teaching ICT in the same year at a private elementary school.  After a period of study at New York Institute of Technology, he returned to Turkey, and from 2003 worked in private schools with international programmes. Serkan gained his master’s degree in 2013 in Educational Administration and Supervision at Sabahattin Zaim University & Marmara University of Istanbul. LIS is his first international school.

    Julie Orchard began teaching at LIS in October 2007 just as the school relocated back to the Könneritzstr. site. While at LIS she has taught Grades 2, 3 and PS3. Julie comes from the city of Adelaide located in South Australia where she taught for over 12 years as a primary school teacher. She has also worked in Seattle, USA at an Early Years Centre catering for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years. Julie holds a Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) degree.

    Tim is from Washington State and has been teaching special education in Las Vegas, Nevada for the last six years. He has worked in a specialised classroom for five years. He earned his Master’s degree in special education from Concordia University. Tim joined LIS in 2016 as a Learning Support Specialist.

    Lisa Regber grew up in Leipzig and has a Bachelor's degree in Social Work from BA Breitenbrunn. Before her studies, she worked and lived in New York (USA) for 1.5 years as an au pair. While she was studying at BA Breitenbrunn she worked at a health-related centre for young people in Edinburgh (GB) and a children's home in Leipzig. She began her career as a social worker and assistant team leader in a children's home. Since December 2014 she has been working as an educator at the Leipzig International Kindergarten in an Early Years 1 class.

    Alana Riess is from North Carolina in the United States. She has a Master's degree in English as an Additional Language from the University of Alabama. Alana joined the LIS team in August 2016 as the co-teacher for Grades 3 and 5. Prior to moving to Leipzig, she worked as a primary grades English and Additional Language teacher in North Carolina.

    Renette grew up in Nova Scotia, Canada. After graduating high school, she moved to the province of New Brunswick to attend Université de Moncton where she completed a combined B.Sc.-B.Ed programme in biology and chemistry. Renette taught science, maths and ESL in the New Brunswick system for 6 years before starting her international career. In 2014, she accepted a chemistry teacher position at the International School of Stuttgart, Germany. She has also taught in Bonn, Germany. She arrived in Leipzig in 2016 to teach chemistry and coach the badminton team.

  • Rodrigues, Dalila

    Dalila Rodrigues is from Braga, Portugal. She has a Licentiate in Physical Education and Sports Sciences from Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, and a Master of Science in Psychology of Sport from Liverpool John Moores University. Dalila has lectured Sports Sciences at Sheffield Hallam University, taught Physical Education and coached various sports in schools and sports clubs in Portugal, United Kingdom, Kuwait, and Qatar before moving to Germany. At Leipzig International School she is a form tutor, and teaches Physical Education across all school years.

  • Rössner, Britta

    Britta Rössner comes from Hildesheim, Germany and holds a Master’s degree in German, English and Social and Economic Psychology from the University of Göttingen. She also obtained a PGCE teaching degree from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, where she taught in high schools. After her return to Germany, Britta lived and taught in Berlin and completed the Staatsexamen für Lehramt an Gymnasien. Britta joined LIS in 2010 and currently teaches German and works as a form tutor in Secondary School.

    Nadine Saber has been living in Leipzig since 2005. After studying Business Administration she worked in the field of auditing for more than seven years. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Organisational Psychology.
    Nadine joined us in 2017 holding the position of Human Resources Administrator.

    Justin grew up in Scotland and Germany and has lived in Leipzig since 2002. He holds a history degree from the University of London and a teaching qualification from the University of Buckingham. He has been at LIS since 2004 and currently teaches history to Grades 8–12 and ToK to Grades 11 and 12. In addition, he is Head of the Social Studies Department and the University Admissions & Careers Advisor.

  • Sauermann, Inge

    Inge Sauermann grew up in Bavaria, completed her teacher training at the Pädagogische Hochschule München and has taught classes in Grades 1 to 6. She earned a Masters degree in pedagogy, sociology and psychology from the Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität, München. Inge graduated from the first Montessori training programme in Leipzig. In 1994, Inge founded the German programme at LIS. She used the latest teaching methods, including designing differentiating materials for student ability, organising and selecting a classroom library, and developing interactive projects. The Ministry of Culture has praised the LIS German programme. Inge continues to build a modern German language programme, adapting it to the needs of LIS as it grows.

     

     

  • Scaia, Eric

    Eric came to LIS from Seattle, Washington in 2012. He earned his Bachelor's in Math Education from the University of Oklahoma and a Masters of Educational Administration from Western Washington University. He currently teaches Mathematics from the sixth grade through the Diploma Programme, is involved in International Award and has previously been a form tutor. Prior to arriving in Leipzig he taught in Washington for 11 years.

  • Schleif, Susanne

    Susanne Schleif is a native Leipziger. She studied German as a foreign language and Oriental philology at Leipzig University and holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics/Language teaching methodology. Susanne taught GSL for young adults at C1/C2-level in Leipzig, GSL and German at a German school in Cairo/Egypt and led various seminars at Halle and Leipzig University. Susanne joined LIS in 2007, currently teaches German for Grades 6-12 and is the coordinator of the Cambridge exams Checkpoint Secondary 1 and IGCSE. Susanne is an IB examiner in German Group 1.

    Lisa Schreiber (Educator) grew up in Meerane near Leipzig . While working as an educator in the Kindergarten St. Nikolai she completed her studies in Early Childhood Education and Management (Bachelor of Arts). Before that she attained a certificate as a Social Assistant. Lisa joined our Nursery Team on 21 November 2014, and she currently looks after the Ducklings with Anna Lena.

    Katherine has been teaching for almost 15 years, mostly internationally. She started her teaching career in Sasebo, Japan as an elementary teacher.  From there she moved to Germany.  She then returned to Arizona and had opportunity to start a Kindergarten Prep school with her sister. Katherine began teaching mostly within Early Years and has truly enjoyed sharing the learning journey with her students.

    Gisela Selbach grew up in the Rhine-Ruhr area of Germany, and has a teaching degree from Munich University. She also holds a German and English degree from Düsseldorf University (Staatsexamen), with the second state exam in secondary education. Before joining LIS, she taught in Yorkshire, England,  (German as Foreign Language and Art) and in Essen at the Humboldt Gymnasium. At LIS, Gisela taught English, German and Art in the first years of the establishment of the Secondary School. She has been in charge of the German department and set up curricula for IGCSE and IB exams. She currently teaches German, is the CAS coordinator for the IB cohorts and an IB examiner for German Literature.

    David Smith is from Bristol, England: he has a degree in English and Related Literature from the University of York, and a teaching certification from the University of London. He worked at public and private schools in England until 1987 when he began an international career which has taken him to Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Portugal and now Germany. He was head of school at two IB World Schools: The British Schools, Montevideo, (1993-2000) and St Julian‘s School, Lisbon (2000-2014) before coming to Leipzig in August 2014. He has taught English at all levels, as well as Theory of Knowledge.

    Michelle Speight comes from Bradford in the north of England, and graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree, specialising in Maths and Science. She joined LIS in 2013, having previously taught in England  for 8 years, then at international schools in Brazil and Thailand. She has taught all Grades from Reception to Grade 6 and has been the subject co-ordinator with responsibility for Maths, History and Music. She currently teaches in Grade 3 and is phase level leader for Grades 3, 4 and 5.

    Brianna grew up in Florida and completed her Bachelor’s degree at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. She received her Master of Arts in School Counselling from the University of Iowa. While living in Iowa City, Brianna provided social-emotional support and instruction to students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. She is currently working as a Social Pedagogue in the Secondary School.

    Jozeka Tajik was born and raised in Germany and is half American, half German. She is the oldest of five siblings - perhaps this is why she decided to become a primary teacher. She studied Primary Teaching at the University of Leipzig and also spent a year at the University of Leicester, UK. Before she did her Referendariat/PGCE, she had already worked at LIS as a preschool teacher and enjoyed it so much that she was very happy to come back to the school to work in the primary section. Usually she teaches as a homeroom teacher, but this year she will take over some German classes.

    Sandra Targosz grew up in Leipzig. She completed her professional training as a state-recognised educator in 2014, working for a part of this time in sunny Barcelona, Spain. She joined the LIS Kindergarten team in 2015 and is now working with the in Nursery 2.

    Cedric Thompson is an English Language & Literature teacher and an Integrated Arts specialist who especially enjoys using music and theatre arts to enhance linguistic skills. Effectively a TCI, Cedric was born in South Africa and emigrated to Canada in 1984, where he continued his studies and worked for ten years in both the Catholic School system and the (public) Toronto School Board. He has been teaching internationally for the past 17 years, sharing his skills in Zimbabwe, Turkey, Uganda, Germany, as well as Ukraine.

    Anja Thörmer grew up in Dessau but has lived in Leipzig since 2001. She holds teaching degrees from the University of Leipzig (1st and 2nd Staatsexamen/ Lehramt Förderschulen & Grundschuldidaktik) and the Goethe Institut (Deutsch als Zweitsprache). Since 2005 Anja has worked in different positions at Leipzig International School and at two public schools in Leipzig. Since 2011 she has been part of our Primary German Team and is now sharing the position of Head of Department with Cornelia Werndl.

    Frank was born in Spain but grew up in Australia. He holds a Diploma of Teaching, B.A. (Honours) and  a Master’s degree in Linguistics. He joined LIS in 2012, having taught a variety of subjects and age groups in Australia for many years and internationally in Spain, Hong Kong, Venezuela and Japan. He currently teaches Secondary English as an Additional Language and heads the EAL department, as well as coaching the Varsity Girls football team.

    Leslie Wandkowsky grew up in Oakville, Ontario where she also taught for eight years before beginning her international teaching career. Leaving the Canadian winters behind, she spent two years teaching in the Cayman Islands before moving to Leipzig in 2009. Throughout her career she has worked mostly in the Early Years and is currently an Early Years 2 teacher and the phase level leader for the Early Years. Leslie has a BA in History from the University of Western Ontario and a PGCE from Canterbury Christ Church University College.

    Cornelia Werndl is a qualified teacher and holds a Staatsexamen in primary maths, German and social studies and in secondary ethics and philosophy. The Staatsexamen is a government licensing examination and is legally equivalent to a Master's degree in Germany. Additionally, she holds a Montessori-Diploma. Cornelia has been working with the LIS primary section since 2006.

    Kristina Wolf is originally from Freiberg, Saxony. After completing school she took care of people's teeth as a dental nurse. However, after 5 years she decided to move to London and work with children, both as an au-pair and a preschool teacher. In 2002 she came back to Leipzig, where she obtained her qualification as an educator and has been part of the LIS team since 2005. Currently she works in the Leipzig International Kindergarten in the Nursery team.

    Tiffany Woolf grew up in small town Vernon, Texas in the USA. She attended Texas Tech University where she obtained a degree in Early Childhood. After moving to Leipzig in 2014 she joined LIS as a substitute at our kindergarten. Tiffany has been an Early Years teacher since January 2015.
