In the Nursery, children’s early learning, growth and development are guided by qualified and caring Nursery staff in a stimulating and nurturing educational environment. The curriculum for infants and toddlers is developmental rather than content-driven; the process of determining what is involved in each child’s individual plan is necessarily more fluid than curriculum planning for older children and students. Developing an individualised curriculum for infants and toddlers involves an on-going, responsive process of observation and documentation, reflection, planning, and implementation. In the Nursery groups the focus is on developing the three core areas of:
The Early Years Foundation Stage Programme (EYFS) is used as a framework to support the learning in our Early Years 1 and 2 groups. The learning strands of this programme correspond to the different areas of education in the conceptual framework for pre-schools of the Free State of Saxony (Sächsischer Bildungsplan).

By using the EYFS as a tool we are able to ensure that the children are being provided with a consistent high quality programme geared to ensuring that children are meeting developmental milestones. We inform ourselves about the progress and development of children by using on-going systematic, formal and informal assessments. These assessments occur within the context of reciprocal communications with families and with sensitivity to the children’s cultural and linguistic experiences.
The Cambridge Primary Programme (CPP) created by the University of Cambridge International Examinations is the core curriculum for Literacy and Mathematics in the classes from Early Years 3 to Grade 5. This educational programme consists of an established, high quality framework that develops children’s skills and competencies in a flexible and interesting way.
The International Primary Curriculum is a creative, thematic curriculum which provides a comprehensive and clear process of learning. This Primary Curriculum is a programme of high quality which prepares our children well for their next educational step, be that at LIS, another international school or a school in Germany.
The Nursery, Early Years 1 and 2 groups are dual language settings where both German and English are spoken and children are encouraged to use either language. We use the One Teacher One Language (OTOL) approach in which one early childhood practitioner speaks to the child in only one language, allowing children to listen and respond in both languages.
In Early Years 3, English is used as the medium of instruction and communication, preparing children for their transfer to Grade 1 at Leipzig International School. In order to ensure that the English language is modeled appropriately our EY3 team consists of English as a first language speakers. Age-appropriate German lessons will be offered to the children three times a week so that they can continue to develop their German language at school.
