LEIPZIG INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

Playground Buddy Programme

The Playground Buddy Programme was founded as a response to problems in the playground such as unsafe playing habits, children having a limited repertoire of games to play and boredom. The idea is empower some of the older children in the school with a sense of responsibility by involving them in helping to prevent such problems from occurring.

LIS Primary Playground Buddies are fourth and fifth grade students who are specially selected through an interview process and trained to support peers during recess to do the following:

  • teach games and organise teams
  • play with children who are lonely
  • help new students to settle in
  • be a friendly person that other children can go to for help if they need

Through the training process, the Playground Buddies aspire to fulfil the aims of the programme:

  • facilitate happier playtimes for children
  • encourage children to play together
  • reduce the incidences of poor behaviour, aggression and rough games
  • help to raise self-esteem by building confidence and trust
  • reduce the number of accidents on the playground through safer play
  • befriend children on the playground who are lonely
  • provide positive role models for younger children

Playground Buddies are available during morning and lunch recess and work in a group of three.

The programme is overseen by educators and who meet weekly so that:

  • possible occurring problems are addressed
  • provide students with the tools to develop social and emotional abilities in order to become effective Playground Buddies
  • help Buddies learn new playground games

The educators report to the Principal on the progress of the programme.
