Life in Leipzig

A great city to live and learn in.

Leipzig is a big part of what makes our boarding experience special.

It is a lively, international city with music, art, sport and culture, a large university community and plenty going on.

At the same time, Leipzig is an easy city to live in. It doesn’t take long to find your way around or begin to feel at home.

For young people starting to experience more independence, we think it offers a great balance.

Historical and Contemporary

Music, Art & Culture

Leipzig is known around the world as a city of music. Bach lived and worked here, and the Gewandhaus Orchestra and St. Thomas Choir continue that tradition today.

But music in Leipzig goes well beyond classical music. There are concerts, festivals, opera, clubs and smaller venues across the city.

Art and culture are also a big part of Leipzig, particularly in the west of the city where our boarding house is located. Learners can explore those interests through LIS and beyond it.

We want the boarding house
to feel like home at the end of the school day,
not another part of the school timetable.

Forests and Parks

A very green City

One of the things we love about Leipzig is how green it is. There are parks throughout the city, canals running through the west and lakes within easy reach.

Learners can cycle, run, swim, paddle, meet friends outside or simply find somewhere green to spend some time.

You get everything that comes with city life, but there is always space to get outside.

Leipzig

A City for young People

Leipzig is a university city, and young people are very much part of its character. Our boarders can go to a concert, join a sports club, meet friends, visit a gallery, spend an afternoon at the lake or find a café they like.

Public transport is well connected here, giving learners the freedom to get to know the city as they become ready to do so.

We also want boarders to become part of Leipzig, not simply visit it. That might mean joining a local sports club, taking music lessons, volunteering or finding something that connects them to people beyond school.

Plagwitz

Our Neighborhood

Our boarding house is in Plagwitz, just a short walk from LIS.

It is a great part of Leipzig to call home. Cafés, restaurants, studios, cultural spaces, canals and green spaces sit alongside the neighbourhood’s industrial history. Learners can walk to school, cycle along the canal, meet friends nearby or take a tram into the centre.

We particularly like that our learners live in a real neighbourhood rather than on a separate boarding campus. They are part of LIS, but they are also part of Leipzig. Over time, Leipzig starts to feel like home.

For us, that connects naturally to Learning to be a Citizen of the World. It isn’t only about understanding the wider world. It is also about learning how to participate in the community around you.
