Geography Survey Fieldwork

In mid-September, the IB Geography students braved the unseasonably chilly weather to undertake their required fieldwork in preparation to complete their internal assessment.

This is one of the few IB subjects that encourage student collaboration for such externally marked assessments and the teamwork was certainly evident as they ventured off in groups of three to conduct pedestrian and traffic counts, environmental surveys, housing quality surveys and an analysis of the types and variety of land uses.

Leipzig is a fascinating city to do urban fieldwork, with its contrasting array of street art, derelict structures and pristine buildings. The surveys are somewhat subjective and as each group took on different parts of the streets surveyed, it will be interesting to decipher what some indicated as ‘aesthetically pleasing’, ‘well designed’ or ‘poorly maintained’.
