We kicked off our very first Science Week with a clear goal. As LIS Primary, we wanted to create curiosity, inspire big questions and show our students how exciting the world of science can be! Throughout the week in May, our classrooms were full of experiments and discoveries. Students had the chance to become real scientists, testing predictions, making observations and exploring how the world works.

To make it even more special, we welcomed our expert secondary science teachers who led engaging sessions and invited our own primary teachers to visit different classes and conduct their own experiments. This created a wonderful sense of shared learning across the school.

In Secondary students had the opportunity to:

  • Make their own electromagnets and test their strength,
  • Investigate how light travels, and explore refraction and reflection,
  • Discover what happens when you heat different materials,
  • Get hands-on with static electricity using a Van de Graaff generator
  • And use a dissection microscope to examine the hidden details of everyday objects.

Meanwhile, our primary classrooms were busy with many science experiments such as:

  • Grew their own crystals and observed how they formed over time,
  • Designed and tested the best paper helicopter for flight time and accuracy,
  • Used chromatography to separate colours and explore how inks are made,
  • Made delicious ice cream while learning about states of matter and freezing points,
  • Investigated sound waves during music lessons through vibration experiments,
  • Engineered egg parachutes to safely deliver their fragile passengers back to Earth,
  • And explored the water cycle through models
  • Observed bean germination and tracked how plants grow over time,
  • And experimented with baking to find out how different ingredients affect the final product—learning that science happens in the kitchen, too!

Science Week is so important for primary-aged students because it lays the foundation for critical thinking and problem-solving. It gives our children the tools to ask “why?” and the confidence to find out “how?” Most importantly, it shows them that science isn’t just something found in textbooks -nit’s all around us, ready to be explored. We’re proud of the excitement and engagement we saw all week long and we can’t wait to build on this momentum in the years to come!

A special shout out to Ms Metzler for spearheading this week! And a big thank you to Ms Brooks, Ms Godfrey, Ms Möller and Mr Sneyd and the 2y science team for offering sessions to our primary classes. It couldn’t have been done it without you!
