Finding their Voice: Informal Concerts at LIS

Our informal concerts in the Secondary School have become one of the most joyful traditions at LIS. A few times each year, students who love music – whether they play an instrument or have a talent for singing – step onto the stage and share what they have been working on. Some perform pieces they have practised for months, others try out their own compositions, and a few take the courageous step of performing in public for the very first time.

These concerts give our students a chance to put their talent to the test in a relaxed, supportive setting. Everyone is welcome to step onto the stage and share a piece of music that matters to them. The atmosphere is informal, but the courage it takes to perform is very real.

True to our LIS value of being courageous, students learn to manage nerves, walk out with confidence, and connect with an audience. They experiment, take risks, and discover that a missed note is not a failure, but part of learning. In this way, the concerts become more than a performance; they are a safe space to grow as artists and as young people.

Open to the entire LIS community – classmates, teachers, families and friends – these concerts embody an inclusive spirit through a mix of classical pieces, jazz standards, film themes, pop songs and original compositions, bringing together listeners of all ages who come not to judge, but to enjoy and encourage.

Every round of applause says: “We see you. We’re glad you were brave enough to share this with us.”

Performing regularly in a smaller setting helps students build stage presence, musical discipline and trust in themselves – skills they carry with pride into bigger venues and more formal occasions. In this sense, the concerts help our learners become proud ambassadors of their own growth and of our school.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to the LIS Music Department, who initiated the informal concerts three years ago and have nurtured them with care, creativity and dedication ever since. Our gratitude also goes to all the families, students, and teachers who attend, cheer, and support. Together, you turn an evening recital into something that truly reflects who we are as an LIS community: courageous, inclusive and proud.
