The purpose of the Learning Support programme at LIS is to respond to the diverse learning needs of all students. This includes students who encounter mild to moderate difficulties, as well as students who may require greater academic challenges than those provided within the regular curriculum.
Students experiencing a specific learning deficit need support in acquiring skills and strategies that will enable them to succeed with the regular curriculum. Through ongoing observation, assessment and evaluation, learning support specialists and classroom teachers work together to ensure that students' learning needs are met. Learning support services may include withdrawal (individual and/or small group intensive instruction), in-class support by a Learning Support Specialist, differentiation by classroom teacher after consultation with Learning Specialist and monitoring student progress.
Lito Vera earned a Bachelor degree in Educational/Pedagogical Sciences from the University of Ioannina, Greece. Upon graduation, she moved to Manchester, UK, where she obtained a Master Degree in Inclusive Education and Special Educational Needs. She started gaining experience in Primary and Secondary schools in the Greater Manchester area as a PPA and Intervention Teacher. Lito strongly believes in the value of Inclusion and considers it as an opportunity to enrich all aspects of our community. Embracing the fact that students exhibit a range of abilities and learn differently, Lito views Inclusion as a means to empower all learners to fulfil their own individual potentials. In her free time, Lito enjoys sculpting and painting as well as playing and watching volleyball. She also likes listening to music and reading books.
Nancy graduated from The University of Connecticut with a BA in Journalism, then worked for about five years as a reporter at two different Connecticut newspapers. While covering the Education beat at a Waterbury, Connecticut, newspaper, she became interested in teaching and went to Southern Connecticut State University to study for her Special Education teacher certification.
Nancy worked as a teacher for six years in a Connecticut public school, then took her first teaching assignment abroad. In all, she has worked in schools in nine different countries outside the USA - Greece, England, Scotland, Hong Kong, Portugal, Romania, Switzerland, Qatar and Weimar, Germany - teaching Special Education, ESL and English. After leaving Hong Kong, Nancy took time off to pursue her M.S. degree in English, also at SCSU. She was an assistant professor of English at Webber International University in Florida. Most recently, Nancy worked as a Learning Specialist & Academic Advisor at Beacon College in Leesburg, Florida. For the Spring 2018 semester, she was the Programme Director of the Beacon in Tuscany study abroad programme in Prato, Italy.
Dimitrios grew up in the North West of Greece in the city of Ioannina. In 2011 he graduated from the University of the Aegean with a BEd in Educational Sciences. In 2013 he relocated to Manchester, England. For 5 years he held various support positions in UK state schools and he completed his MA in Inclusive Education and SEN at Manchester Metropolitan University (2014). His Qualified Teacher Status was awarded by the National College for Teaching and Learning (UK). Dimitrios' philosophy is that of Inclusive Education. He has a positive attitude and is determined to help his students with their learning and give them confidence to succeed. His hobbies are football and running and, outside school, he can be found coaching football, as he is a qualified coach from the English FA.
