Exploring Venezuelan Cuisine: A Culinary Adventure with the Grade 8 Spanish Class
On a fun Friday in March the Grade 8 Spanish class went to a Venezuelan bistro. The students were given menus in Spanish, immersing them in the language they chose to learn as a third language in Secondary. The students explored a variety of traditional Venezuelan dishes and drinks, from arepas to pabellón criollo. Some tried adventurous options like hamburguesa criolla, while others sampled empanadas, tequeños, and chichas.
The students practiced their Spanish skills by conversing with the restaurant owner. It was a proud moment for the students and teachers as they navigated the exchange entirely in Spanish. As the dishes arrived, the students were delighted by the flavors, which transported them to Venezuela.
The arepas, stuffed with savory fillings, were a highlight, as were the refreshing papelón con limón, parchita, and tamarindo juice. During the meal, the class celebrated Ms. Murina’s birthday with a rendition of “Feliz Cumpleaños,” adding to the warm atmosphere.
At the end of the meal, the students left the bistro not only with full stomachs, but hopefully with an appreciation for Venezuelan culture and cuisine. The experience allowed them to apply their Spanish skills in a real-world setting, preparing them ultimately to be global citizens.
