Leipzig International School (LIS) is a non-profit co-educational day school for students from age 1 to age 18, who are part of Leipzig's diverse international community. More than 900 students from 70 countries attend LIS and the Leipzig International Kindergarten, with the most represented nations after the host country being the United States of America, Japan, United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. Leipzig International School employs over 190 staff members, from 20 different nationalities.
The school's three sites are in residential districts in western Leipzig. The Könneritzstraße campus (Primary and Secondary School) is situated adjacent to the spacious Clara-Zetkin-Park. The Käferhaus Kindergarten is located in walking distance to Leipzig International School, and the Leipzig International Kindergarten, opened in 2014, can be found in Karl-Heine-Straße/Schleußig.
At Leipzig International School the language of instruction is English. English as a foreign language is available to those who need it. German is taught both as an additional language and in standard classes following the State curriculum. Additional Student Support Services (learning support, medical, careers) and varied counselling services are also available to all LIS students. Two in-house nurses provide immediate care and health education.
There are no cancelled school lessons at Leipzig International School, as LIS works with qualified substitute teachers.
The Primary School at LIS follows the International Primary Curriculum, and the Secondary School the Cambridge Secondary 1 and IGCSE Programme. The gateway to higher education is the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. This IBDP qualifies students to study at leading universities in Germany and all around the world.
The school year begins on 1 August and ends on 31 July, with classes running from mid-August to the end of June. The school year is divided into three terms. During the school year there are traditionally the following holidays: Half-term holidays in October, Winter holidays in December, Half-term holidays in February and Spring holidays in April, which also overlap with the Saxon holiday calendar where possible. In addition, national or regional public holidays are taken into account at LIS.
A first-class after-school programme (Hort) for primary school students at Leipzig International School is offered in the mornings from 07:00 to 08:25 and after school from 15:00 to 17:00. There are no extra costs for this as it is already covered by the school fees.
At Leipzig International School, we aim to keep class sizes to a maximum of 20 students. In many specialist and optional classes, numbers are even smaller.
Leipzig International School offers first-class international schooling in English for children from different backgrounds, supports the local community and promotes intercultural understanding.
